2013 Chevy Traverse debuts with new face, minor tweaks.

01-2013-chevrolet-traverse628opt

Not to be outdone today by Ford's debut of a twin-turbo Explorer Sport model, Chevrolet has taken the wraps off its redesigned 2013 Traverse.

The big news is all up front, where the 2013 Traverse features what Chevy is calling the new face of its crossover utility vehicles. It includes a three-bar upper and two-bar lower grille design, as well as a "powerdome" hood, though no changes have been made to the direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 underneath. Though everything was redesigned ahead of the A-pillars, the rest of the body was left alone until you reach the D-pillars. Aft of those you'll find a redesigned rear end with new taillights and liftgate and a relocated license plate pocket.

Chevy has tinkered with the interior too, but not much. The Traverse's biggest selling point has always been its voluminous interior passenger and cargo space, and that hasn't changed. The most noteworthy addition inside is that of MyLink, GM's branded infotainment system that supports Bluetooth voice and audio, as well as apps like Pandora and Stitcher.

Minor suspension adjustments round out the rather short list of changes for this mid-cycle refresh. The segment's current leader is the aforementioned Explorer, which sold around 135,000 units last year. The Traverse wasn't too far behind with sales surpassing 107,000 units. Our guess is that these 2013 model year changes probably aren't enough to unseat the Explorer, but should be enough to keep the Traverse selling well in this quickly growing segment.

SHELBY AMERICAN INTRODUCES MOST POWERFUL SHELBY YET AT NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

Shelby-1000-lead

Shelby American™ will introduce its most powerful Shelby yet on April 5, 2012, at the New York International Auto Show. Carroll Shelby and his team created the Shelby 1000 by starting with a 2012 Ford Shelby GT500 and kicking its handling, horsepower and braking to the performance edge.

The Shelby 1000 will be offered in both a street and a Shelby 1000 S/C “off-road” track version. The street legal, pump gas version dyno’s out at approximately 950 HP, while the track oriented S/C edition is rated at over 1,100 HP.

“Carroll Shelby is a visionary who has pushed the boundaries of performance his entire life,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “He challenged the Shelby American team to develop the Shelby 1000 and wanted to unveil this amazing new Shelby at the New York Auto Show celebrating 50 years since he unveiled the very first Shelby Cobra that changed the face of high performance. We will have that very car, Cobra #1 (CSX2000) along with Shelby 1000 on display in our Shelby American booth in New York.”

To build the car that Carroll Shelby envisioned, Shelby American takes Ford’s 5.4 liter V8 down to the block to add new rods, crank and pistons. The team flows the heads, upgrades the cooling and exhaust, replaces the supercharger, tunes it and then sprinkles it with a little Shelby magic.

To complement the new power, the Shelby 1000 has improved the handling and stopping capabilities with 6 pistons in front and 4 pistons in the rear, while the suspension includes new struts, sway bars and bushings. The new solid driveshaft is connected to a new 9-inch rear end. Exterior cues incorporate aerodynamics while maintaining a stealthy appearance. The hood, rear panel and splitter are functional pieces.

A limited production of Shelby 1000s will be built, each numbered and documented. The post-title street package for the Shelby 1000 starts at $149,995 and the track S/C version starts at $154,995, not including the base GT500. A completed Shelby 1000 is expected to be approximately $200,000.

Shelby American will accept orders once the Shelby 1000 is unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.

2013 Nissan Altima Sedan Teased Again Before New York Debut.

2013-nissan-altima-profile-teaser-623x389

With the New York auto show just weeks away, Nissan continues to tease the public with more shots of the upcoming 2013 Altima. This time, it’s a look at the new sedan’s profile.

This time around, we get another peek of the muscular side view of the 2013 Altima sedan, which will face a reinvigorated midsize field that includes a revamped 2013 Honda Accord and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, not to mention the redone 2012 Toyota Camry.

Last week, the automaker showed off taillights for the new midsize sedan. The housing wraps around to the rear fender and is finished off with a boomerang-like design. Prior to that, we got a sneak peek of the front fascia, which features angular headlights, a bulging hood, and an upside-down trapezoid grille with a chrome-like finish. Nissan also showed off a few teaser videos. The first video is a quick, seven-second shot of the Altima’s roof, while the second teaser focuses on a front fascia with the optional HID headlights.

In addition to styling, Nissan hopes to keep the Altima on top of its game with updated powertrains. A four-cylinder engine will once again serve as a base engine, which is expected to get a revised CVT. Nissan will probably follow the Camry’s lead and bring back a V-6 for power-hungry customers. Finally, an all-new hybrid system is expected to debut a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder supercharged engine supplemented by an electric motor. The hybrid powertrain should also get the revised CVT, dubbed Xtronic.

Revised 2013 Ford Mustang V6, GT, and Boss Priced

2013-mustang-626x429

Ford has released pricing figures for its refreshed 2013 Mustang family, with the base V-6 coupe starting at $22,995. That’s $110 less than last year’s entry-level model; GT and Boss prices go up slightly.

Complete pricing for the new lineup:

  • V-6: $22,995 + $1195 for six-speed automatic ($110 decrease from last year)
  • V-6 convertible: $27,995 + $1195 for six-speed automatic ($110 decrease from last year)
  • GT: $31,095 + $1195 for six-speed automatic ($590 increase over last year)
  • GT convertible: $36,095 + $1195 for six-speed automatic ($590 increase over last year)
  • Boss 302: $42,995 + $6995 for Laguna Seca package ($1890 increase over last year)

For 2013, the Recaro seats previously limited to the GT500 (pricing for which also was recently released) and Boss are now available to all Mustang shoppers, while the GT gets new HID headlights and eight additional hp for a total of 420. All Mustangs also get new front and rear styling, as well as new paint and wheel options, and automatic-transmission models now include a rocker switch on the shifter to manually select gears (that should be satisfying).

A Premium package can be fitted for $4695, and includes a Shaker audio system and voice-activated Sync command system. Ordering the Premium package allows one to spec Track Apps, which display performance data in the gauge cluster. The V-6 again offers a Performance package for $1995; it brings a strut-tower brace, upgraded suspension and brakes, 255/40 summer tires, 19-inch wheels, a 3.31 rear-axle ratio, and some eye candy.

The GT options list still includes a $1695 Brembo Brake package featuring 14-inch vented rotors and four-piston calipers up front and 11.8-inch vented rear rotors, as well as unique tuning for both the suspension and stability-control system. GT shoppers can get the Brembo kit as part of an available Track package that also includes a limited-slip diff, the radiator from the Boss, upgraded brake pads, and an oil cooler.

Options for the 2013 Boss 302, one of our 10Best Cars for 2012, are limited to a package that bundles Recaro cloth seats and a Torsen limited-slip diff for $1995. Well, you also can upgrade to the Laguna Seca edition, which turned the second-fastest lap ever by a car under $60,000 during our latest Lightning Lap festivities. If you have the means, we highly recommend picking one up.

Ford touts Escape's turbocharged towing prowess

Escapex-wide-community

Ford is touting how its 237-horsepower EcoBoost turbocharged engine can tow 3,500 pounds when it comes to the new version of the Escape small crossover.

Ford says that's best among other small sport utilities with turbocharged engines, like the Volkswagen Tiguan. It can tow 2,200 pounds. Turbocharged versions of Kia Sportage and Acura RDX have tow ratings of 2,000 pounds and 1,500 pounds respectively, according to Ford.

Even at 3,500, you'll be fairly limited as to what you can tow. That big trailer will probably have to stay home. But Ford says it's good enough to tow personal watercraft or a snowmobile on a trailer.

The 2-liter EcoBoost engine replaces the 3-liter V-6 engine in the current Escape. While it hasn't been rated yet, Ford is confident that gas mileage will exceed the V-6's 19 miles per gallon in the city, 25 mpg on the highway.

Ford is clearly banking that its EcoBoost will prove as popular as it has in the F-Series pickups, where to now accounts for more than half of sales. But Escape will have other engine choices, too, including a smaller, 177-horsepower EcoBoost. There will be non-turbocharged 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that will produce 171 horsepower. All three engines are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.

(Reuters) - Nissan will power a revolutionary DeltaWing car that will enter this year's Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race, the Japanese manufacturer said on Tuesday.

The V-shaped car will not be classified at Le Mans, taking the number 0 with a place in the pitlane reserved for experimental cars because it does not conform to existing regulations.

However, the team behind DeltaWing intend to use the vehicle, which has half the weight and half the aerodynamic drag of conventional racers while being powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine, to showcase pioneering technology.

"This announcement gives Nissan the opportunity to become part of a ground-breaking motorsport project and one which could shape the future of the sport," said Nissan executive vice-president Andy Palmer in a statement.

The sleek DeltaWing, built by American Dan Gurney's Californian-based All American Racers, has a long thin 'fuselage' extending to two narrow front tyres aligned close together.

The driver sits well back, almost over the rear axle.

The team expect it to use half the amount of fuel as conventional racers while setting lap times between the Le Mans LMP1 and LMP2 categories despite having only half the power.

The first two confirmed drivers are Britain's Marino Franchitti, younger brother of Indy 500 winner and four-times IndyCar champion Dario and a cousin of Formula One racer Paul Di Resta, and Germany's FIA GT1 champion Michael Krumm.

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The essence of power

Virginia, USA - Let me begin by saying that this text targets the real muscle car connoisseur, those of you who get chills from the sound of a V8 engine speeding down a race track.

In fact, the Camaro ZL1 targets this very specific group of track and performance lovers. The name “ZL1” will surely make some of you feel nostalgic as it was also used back in 1969 to designate a limited edition of the Camaro.

By introducing such a car in 2012, Chevrolet confirms the ongoing rivalry with its closest competitor, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500.

Even though the technology found under the hood of the ZL1 is rather simple, it remains efficient nonetheless. Of course, V8 engines have undergone a significant evolution in the course of the past few decades. In order to boost its performance, the V8 LSA engine of 6.2 litres that propels the ZL1 has been teamed up with an Eaton supercharger, resulting in an insane capacity of 580hp. With so much power at hand, a period of adaptation is required to enjoy the full potential of the beast.

Even though I am a regular at racing GTs of comparable potency, I remained very polite with the accelerator for the first couple of laps on the sinuous track at Virginia International Speedway. Mastering it requires precision and tact. With a whole cavalry roaring under the hood, the slightest “faux-pas” could put you in an embarrassing position.

One of the Top Gear U.S.A. reporters learned it the hard way when he lost control of his Camaro and sent it waltzing nose first in the tire wall after only a couple laps. The guy was fine, but the car was significantly damaged.

The V8 can be twinned either with a six-speed Tremec 6 manual transmission or with a surprising six-speed automatic. The acceleration and performance are phenomenal. Even with the traction control system activated, the power can barely be contained.

The 0-100 is reached in just a little under four seconds and the quarter mile in 11.9 seconds. The max speed estimated by the builder is of 290 km/h. With such numbers, one thing is certain: future owners will have to hit the track to experience the full extent of the ZL1 power.

Known in the past for their incredible performances, the ’70s’ muscle cars had important deficiencies in terms of brakes and suspensions. A situation long forgotten.

The Camaro ZL1 brakes as wonderfully as it accelerates. It comes equipped with oversized Brembo disc brakes. Lap after lap, the braking remained efficient and constant. The air vents located on the front grille work wonders when it comes to cooling the braking system.

On the race track, when pushing the Camaro to its limits, it does show some signs of oversteer, especially when coming out of curves. On the other hand, the Magnetic Ride Control suspension offers a steady and dynamic control of the car and can be set in two different modes: Touring and Sport.

Though the physical changes of the ZL1, often compared to the SS version, are very sober, a handful of accessories enhance its more aggressive silhouette as well as its aerodynamics. Its aluminum hood decorated with a carbon fibre exhaust fan and a front spoiler give the beast all its character.

The rear end has not been forgotten: it has been given a new airfoil, four huge exhaust pipes and a built-in air distributor. Its look is completed with a set of 20-inch alloy wheels and a xenon lighting system.

The ZL1 edition Camaro comes with a well set up cabin. The seating and steering are covered with black leather and suede decorated with red stitching. The ZL1 logo embroidered on the front headrests add to the luxury. The roof, being very low, might not suit a taller clientele who might end up feeling in a tight spot behind the wheel. All the pressure indicators are also hard to read as they are located low on the dashboard.

Some commodities are part of the standard equipment such as the rearview camera and a Head up Display (which consists in projecting the speed and rpm in the windshield, at eye level), similar to the display found in the Corvette.

The all new ZL1 will be available in March 2012 at any GM dealer across Canada. Priced at $58,000, it offers the best price/performance ratio on the market.

With these numbers, Chevrolet sets the bar higher in the modern muscle car family. I am already excited to see how the competitors are going to react to this new ruffian.
