Tips for Safe Winter Driving

Safe-driving

Check the weather first. A little common sense can go a long way. Before you even venture out, listen to your local radio or TV station or check the Internet to see what weather and road conditions you should expect. If you can postpone your trip, it's always safer to wait out any potentially hazardous weather.

Keep your gas tank at least half full. Fuel gives added weight to the vehicle and this also helps ensure that you won't run out of fuel in adverse weather. It can also help keep ice crystals from forming inside your fuel line.

Keep a closer eye on your tire inflation. Your tire pressure can drop one pound per square inch for every 10°F drop in the outdoor temperature.

Clear your view. Be sure your windows are all free from snow, ice and frost. Don’t forget to scrape your sideview mirrors too.

Know your vehicle’s features. If your vehicle is equipped with Traction Control™, the feature will automatically detect and control your wheel spin to help maintain the stability of your vehicle in slippery conditions, such as snow and ice. If your vehicle is equipped with Four-Wheel Drive (4WD), you can give yourself extra traction in slippery conditions by shifting into 4WD. Consult your Owner Guide for details.

Give other vehicles extra space. Err on the side of caution when it comes to your speed. Accidents often happen when drivers travel too close or too fast for wintery conditions.

Know what to do if you start skidding. Sometimes skidding or sliding on icy, snow-covered roads is unavoidable. If your vehicle starts to skid, take your foot off the accelerator, gradually turn your vehicle in the direction you are skidding and gently apply steady pressure to your vehicle's brakes. Don’t pump them, as it may cause you to lose control of the vehicle.

Don’t spin your tires if you get stuck in the snow. This won’t help you regain traction and will only create a rut. Instead, use a shovel or ice scraper to remove any snow or ice from underneath the tires. Pour sand or gravel (or salt if you have it) under the drive wheel tires to help improve your traction. Then turn off your vehicle’s Traction Control™ (if equipped) and try accelerating gently both forward and in R (Reverse). If none of these techniques work, call for assistance.

The Redesigned 2013 Ford Fusion

2013_ford_fusion
Of all the types of cars on the market, mid-size sedans are the most popular in America's auto landscape.

And of all the new mid-size sedans, the 2013 Ford Fusion has seen the most radical redesign. It now wears flowing lines and an elegant grill.

The interior has been dramatically redone, providing drivers with more of an upscale feel. Want technology? The Ford Fusion has options abound. For example, if parallel parking is a challenge, let Ford's Parking Assist System do the work for you.

A new lineup of engines means improved fuel economy for the Ford Fusion. There's a hybrid version available, but the optional EcoBoost four cylinder engines offers good mileage too. A 1.6 liter version is good for 23 mpg city and 36 mpg highway in EPA ratings.

The new Ford Fusion has got a lot going for it including great styling and a lot of cool features and even some fuel-saving engine choices. But there's a lot of competition out there with mid-sized sedans including a new entry from a very strong player in the segment

 2015 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic American nameplates, and it will be the subject of a complete redesign for 2015. So far, only promotional materials, such as teaser photos, have given any indication of what car buyers can expect. But Brauer had some ideas about what the future may hold for this Mustang.
“Expect the classic Mustang lines to give way to a sleek, modern shape that looks forward, not back,” he said. “The same can be said of the next Mustang's technology, where items like an independent rear suspension and cutting-edge engine tech will help it achieve performance and fuel efficiency.”

Get a Leg Up on Thanksgiving Traffic With a Complete Vehicle Inspection.

Congestion1_2

Don’t let soaring gas prices gobble up your hard earned money this Thanksgiving weekend; carve out some time to perform some simple fixins on your vehicle for better gas mileage, advises the Car Care Council. Or how about:

Before stuffing your family in the car…
Don’t hit the road on a wing and a prayer…
Get a leg up on the traffic by…
More miles per gallon is all gravy…
The dinner and the driving – it’s all about the gas…

OK, had enough? Put a fork in it already? Got your attention? Seriously though, Thanksgiving is one of the most heavily traveled holidays by vehicle and gas mileage can be easily improved by checking a few basic items on the car.

Start with the tires and make sure they are inflated properly. When they aren’t, it is similar to driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon. Tire pressure should be checked at least once a month and don’t forget the spare.

Air filters should not be clogged with dirt, dust or bugs. A dirty filter will choke off the air and create a “rich” mixture – too much gas being burned for the amount of air – that wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. A rule of thumb is to have the air filter inspected at each oil change and replaced when dirty, torn, water or oil soaked, or when showing other signs of wear. Replacing a clogged air filter will improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent.

Spark plugs are an often-neglected maintenance item because of their long-life expectancy. They are one of the hardest working parts of the engine and when functioning properly, they improve reliability and maximize engine performance and fuel economy. Plugs that are worn or fouled can cause the engine to lose power or misfire, which wastes fuel. The replacement interval for spark plugs can range from 30,000 to 100,000 miles.

A check of the spark plugs is usually part of a routine tune-up during which your automotive technician makes sure other ignition system and /or emission system parts, as well as the onboard computer control system, are working properly. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy and produces the lowest level of emissions.

Gas caps should not be damaged, loose or missing. About 17 percent of the vehicles on the road have loose, damaged or missing gas caps, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year.

In addition to proper vehicle maintenance, motorists can also get better gas mileage by avoiding aggressive driving, which can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and five percent on city streets, and avoiding excessive idling as a vehicle gets zero miles per gallon when sitting idle. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient.

Motorists should observe the speed limit as gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mph driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon. Cruise control helps maintain a constant speed on the highway.

Combining errands into one trip will also save gas and time. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multi-purpose trip covering the same distance.

Motorists should avoid carrying unneeded heavy items in the trunk as an extra 100 pounds can cut fuel efficiency by a percent or two.

The Farm | CMA Awards 2012 | Chevrolet

During CMA Awards week, Chevrolet hosted a special concert event. Watch as Lauren, from CountryMusicIsLove.com, talks to The Farm about their new single and see the live performance of "Be Grateful."

Chevrolet, Disney Inspire Design Innovation with Test Track.

Two iconic brands collaborate to deliver interactive, personalized experience

DETROIT – Chevrolet designers and Walt Disney Imagineers have joined forces to give Walt Disney World Resort guests a deep look inside a professional design studio creating a first-of-its-kind multi-sensory virtual experience in automotive design.

Chevrolet and Disney tapped their best design talent with expertise ranging from industrial and automotive design to architecture and animation. The design collaboration began 18 months ago with a few guiding principles – create an experience that is personal, future-focused and optimistic.

The two teams met regularly throughout the development process in both GM's Design studios in Warren, Mich., and at Test Track in Epcot in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The collaboration allowed for the greatest level of innovation yet ensured the values of both brands were accurately represented in the new attraction, while allowing both teams to learn from each other's expertise.

"At Chevrolet, the diversity of talent on our team allows us to consistently produce sophisticated, refined and detailed design – but we don't typically design through the eyes of a 12-year-old," said Jeff Mylenek, GM Design manager, Global Exhibit and Merchandising Design. "Working with Walt Disney Imagineering, we were inspired to see our brand story from a more youthful perspective and really opened the parameters on how to approach this design challenge."

The result is a unique experience that gives an authentic, inside-the-studio look at the actual automotive design process, while empowering guests themselves to create their own designs, possibly inspiring the next generation of automotive designers.

"The re-imagined Test Track portrays an optimistic view of the future, and reflects the deep collaboration between Disney and Chevrolet on both the design and the overall experience," said Eric Jacobson, senior vice president, Walt Disney Imagineering. "It's a thrilling attraction supported by rich exhibit displays and interactive elements that bring guests directly into the design process – with a few surprises thrown in."

The teams used multiple mediums throughout the re-imagined attraction for storytelling, including:

Visual cues inspired by Chevrolet's expressive vehicle design language throughout the architectural elements in the space as well as in the interactive displays; speed forms and concept vehicle displays, like EN-V and Miray, provide a glimpse into the future of Chevrolet design.

Advanced computer technology – similar to that used by Chevrolet designers every day – powers the guest design experience, while radio frequency technology allows them to take their unique vehicle design with them through the entire ride.

A thrill-ride that provides the test experience where each guest's vehicle design is evaluated.

Social media sharing extends the experience beyond the day at the park.

Test Track Presented by Chevrolet offers Disney guests a three-part experience:

First, guests will have the opportunity to design their own vehicle – car, truck or crossover – with some helpful hints from the Chevrolet designers built into the process. "Designing a successful vehicle requires some careful thought about how to balance capability, efficiency, responsiveness and power – some of the key elements that Chevrolet designers must consider with every new vehicle they imagine," said Mylenek.

Next, they will have the chance to test drive their vehicle design, through the ride, on track surfaces that simulate the actual vehicle validation process that Chevrolet engineers use to ensure every new vehicle meets the highest performance standards. Each guest's vehicle design will be evaluated and scored based on how well their design balanced the core attributes.

Finally, guests have the opportunity to race their vehicle over changing terrain and extreme conditions on a digital driving table, produce and share a TV commercial starring their custom vehicle and pose for action shots in front of their design.

The re-imagined Test Track Presented by Chevrolet will open on Dec. 6, 2012. For more information, please visit: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/parks/epcot/attractions/test-track/

Chevrolet Enters B-Spec Competition with Sonic Race Car.

Concept previews production-intended package for subcompact racing series

DETROIT – Acclaimed for its balanced handling and sporty driving experience, Chevrolet Sonic has been transformed by Chevrolet Performance for the track as a B-Spec race car concept. It previews a competition kit for racers to help them convert a street-going Sonic into a dedicated race car.

"Sonic B-Spec concept demonstrates the car's capabilities in the increasingly popular B-Spec subcompact classes in SCCA and Grand Am series," said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "Sonic's great balance of power and responsive handling make it a natural on the track – and a formidable competitor."

Conforming to series guidelines, the Sonic B-Spec concept's modifications are limited to safety features and chassis/suspension enhancements designed for the rigors of racing. Components of the production-intended competition kit on the concept include chassis, suspension and other parts required to transform a production Sonic into a competitive race car:

Front strut coil-over assemblies and mounts
Rear shock coil-over assemblies and mounts
Adjustable front stabilizer bar links
Rear axle shim kit
Inlet air restrictor
Recalibrated ECM and EBCM.

The Luxor Blue concept vehicle – accented with Monaco Blue graphics – also shows lightweight 15x7-inch racing wheels wrapped with complementing racing tires. Chevrolet is still evaluating the components of the kit, so some of the parts may change for production.

Safety features, such as the roll cage, safety seat, window net and racing harnesses, would be sourced separately by the builder. The concept vehicle is shown with a Monaco Blue-painted roll cage, carbon fiber racing seat, five-point safety harness, window safety net, center catch net, quick-release steering wheel/hub system and a fire extinguisher.

Like the other vehicles in B-Spec classes, the Sonic race car concept's 1.8L engine remains unchanged from its factory specifications, although an air restrictor is employed to equalize its output with other competitors. It is backed by the production five-speed manual transmission.

The Sonic B-Spec competition kit is anticipated to go on sale in the first quarter of 2013 through Chevrolet Performance retailers.

The 2013 Chevrolet Sonic is one of the segment's best sellers and is positioned between the all-new Spark and the popular Cruze to round out Chevy's small car portfolio. As the only subcompact built in America, Sonic comes with segment-leading 10 standard air bags and leads in interior roominess. The performance-inspired Sonic RS hits dealerships in late 2012 and features Chevrolet's exclusive infotainment system MyLink , with a seven-inch color touch screen radio capable of displaying smartphone-based music, videos, photos and contacts for hands-free calling. To learn more about Sonic, visit the Chevy Sonic Facebook page, follow on Twitter at @ChevyLife or check out letsdothis.com.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design, and high quality. GM to debut new Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra pickups in December.

Bilde

General Motors plans to reveal its redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups Dec. 13 in Detroit, officials said Monday.

The highly anticipated trucks are central to GM's profitability in North America. The Silverado 1500, which hasn't been redesigned since 2006, is easily GM's best-selling vehicle in the U.S. at 298,200 units in the first nine months of the year.

The 2014 Silverado and Sierra are expected to hit showrooms at an unspecified time in 2013. The public will get to see the vehicles in person at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

"The bold exterior design of the new Silverado reflects the enhanced capabilities of the truck while features such as jewel-like, projector beam headlamps showcase the careful attention given to every detail," GM said in a statement.

The Silverado has entered the "final validation" phase and "torture testing," the automaker said earlier this month. The pickup competes against Ford's F-150 series and Chrysler's Ram pickup.

The vehicle will start production in 2013 at the company's plants in Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Silao, Mexico.

Silverado marketing manager Tony Truelove said in a recent interview that the new vehicle would balance "performance capability and fuel economy."

"We don't trade off one to get the other. We feel we have a very good overall truck and will continue to improve on that formula for the next generation," Truelove said.

Basic Car Maintenance Tips to Keep You on the Road.

Simple-car-maintenance-tips
Take care of your car and it will take care of you. Following basic car maintenance tips can help keep you on the road and out of the repair shop.

A little vehicular TLC can even help stretch your fuel dollar and help the environment, too.

Here are some car care guidelines:

Battery

Most car batteries today are maintenance-free, sealed and can last more than three years. The first sign your battery should be replaced is often trouble starting the engine.

Tires

A car tire inflated to 35 pounds per square inch (psi) can lose one psi every month or for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature change, so your car maintenance checklist should include checking tire pressure. Find the recommended level in the owner’s manual or on a sticker on the driver’s side door jamb. And don’t forget the spare.

Rotate tires every 6,000 miles to prevent uneven wear, replace them when they become worn and have the alignment checked if the car pulls to either side when driving or if you notice uneven tire wear.

Engine oil

Checking and changing oil is critical to keep today’s engines running properly and efficiently. Follow manufacturer guidelines for changing the lubricant – generally, every 3,000 miles or three to six months.

Check the oil level with the engine off and the car parked on a level surface. Open the hood, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel, then return it to the oil reservoir. Take it out again and see whether the level is within the acceptable range marked on the dipstick. If you add oil, don’t overfill, which can damage the engine.

Transmission fluid

Checking the automatic transmission fluid is another vital item on the car maintenance checklist. Look for a reservoir marked ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and follow the same steps as monitoring the oil level – only this time, with the engine running. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations for change intervals, about every 30,000 miles.

Engine coolant

Replace most engine coolant or antifreeze every 30,000 miles – or every two to three years. Newer formulas, however, may last up to 50,000 miles. To check coolant level, turn the car off and wait for the engine to cool. Locate the coolant reservoir (usually a translucent plastic tank) and eyeball the level of the coolant against the full and low indicators.

Power steering fluid

Power steering fluid should be changed every three years or 50,000 miles. If you have a power steering fluid reservoir, check the level visually; otherwise, follow the dipstick method. Low power steering fluid may indicate a leak, so have your mechanic take a look.

Brakes and brake fluid

Check to ensure that brake fluid levels are within tolerance. How often you need to replace brake pads or other components depends on how you drive and typical driving conditions. Warning signs of a brake problem include noise, vibration or “grabbing” when you apply the brakes. Working on your brakes is a job probably best left to the professionals.

Air filter

Basic car maintenance suggests changing your air filter each year or every 12,000-15,000 miles. A clean air filter can help your engine “breathe” better and improve gas mileage and reduce harmful emissions.

Fuel filter

Replace it annually to help prevent debris from clogging your car’s fuel line.

Windshield wipers and wiper fluid

Windshield wiper care is one of the most neglected basic car care tips. Replace the blades every six to 12 months or whenever the rubber becomes worn. Check the wiper fluid reservoir every week or so and keep it full.

Headlights and brake lights

With your car turned on and parked, have someone walk around to see that your lights are working – headlights, brake and tail lights, turn signals, etc.

Replacing bulbs in today’s vehicles can be a challenge. Have a mechanic do the job, particularly replacing and aiming headlights. A pro also knows if the problem is a blown fuse, not a burned out bulb.

The high-character concept will introduce a unique new genre to the automotive world. The vehicle has been created specifically for the Sao Paulo show with Brazilian designers. Built in Brazil, it underlines the strategic importance of Brazil for Nissan's growth plans.

Nissan doubled its sales to claim almost 2% of the Brazilian market in 2011 and aims to account for more than 5% of new car sales in the country by 2016. This goal is backed by a new manufacturing facility that is currently under construction in Resende which will produce up to 200,000 units when operations start in 2014.

"The showcar will dazzle on two counts," said Nakamura. "It is a genuinely new and exciting concept, and it will explode with energetic design and impressive color that fully express our impression toward the country. When our designers arrived in Brazil to start work on the project, they loved the vibrancy and passion of the country but were a little surprised in the rather conservative colors of the cars on the streets. They all seemed to be monochrome - silver or black. Finally, they've made sure our showcar might have a color as lively as the country."

DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 5, 2012 – Ford Warriors in Pink®, the Ford Motor Company program that raises awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer, has created a limited-edition T-shirt inspired by film and television actor and supporter in the fight against breast cancer James Denton. For every shirt sold, 100 percent of net proceeds go directly to the Pink Fund, providing real help now.

“The last thing someone with breast cancer needs to worry about is how they are going to pay their bills,” says Denton. “With the muscle of Ford Warriors in Pink behind the Pink Fund, we think we can really accomplish something for people.”

The dark gray, V-neck T-shirt inspired by Denton showcases symbols of a warrior and illustrates the fight that it takes to battle the disease. Available now, exclusively at www.fordcares.com, consumers can buy this limited-edition T-shirt to support the Pink Fund. Newly added as a charity partner to Ford Warriors in Pink, the Pink Fund is an organization that provides short-term financial aid to people during active treatment – giving them time to fight, heal and get back on their feet.

“The burden of a cancer diagnosis is devastating, not only physically and emotionally, but financially. Every day, countless patients and their families struggle to make ends meet as medical, car, household and other bills pile up,” said Pink Fund founder Molly MacDonald. “We’re excited about this collaboration with James and Warriors in Pink on this limited-edition T-shirt, as it will allow us to reach even more people in need.”

The T-shirt, along with the 2012 collection of Ford Warriors in Pink apparel and accessories, is created for women, men and children, featuring symbols of hope, strength and unity in the fight against breast cancer. The 2012 Ford Warriors in Pink collection is now available at www.fordcares.com, with 100 percent of net proceeds going directly to the fight against breast cancer.

“Warriors in Pink is all about the courage and strength it takes to fight this disease,” said Tracy Magee, Ford Primary Brand Experiential Marketing manager. “We are thrilled to be working with James Denton and the Pink Fund, as this partnership is just one more way for us to raise awareness and continue the fight.”

The Ford commitment runs well beyond raising funds. The company is dedicated to making a difference 365 days a year by encouraging women to become informed and visit their doctors, educating them that early detection saves lives. 2012 marks Ford Motor Company’s 18th year of support, having dedicated more than $115 million to the cause to date.

About the Pink Fund
The Pink Fund provides short-term financial aid through direct bill payment on behalf of women and men in active breast cancer treatment who have lost all or part of their income as a result of their treatment protocol. The most frequent need is for coverage of mortgage/rent, utilities, insurance policies and automobile loans.

Founded in 2006, the Pink Fund is governed by a volunteer board of directors, and assisted by an advisory council. Supporting organizations, businesses, and individuals host special events and fundraisers throughout the year. The Pink Fund coined the term SurThrivor and has created a branded line of SurThrivor products to promote the mission and support the organization.
